This chart is based on the folklore of the Middle East and North Africa. Though it is unknown exactly when birthstones gained popularity in this region, thought it is safe to say that this list is not more than a few hundred years old. The gems are presented with their equivalent month in the Gregorian calendar for ease of comparison.
