Billing's Wife
(Verses 96 - 102)

96
Þat ec þa reynda,
er ec i reyri sat
oc vettac mins mvnar;
hold oc hiarta
var mer en horsca mør,
þeygi ec hana at heldr hefic.

What I proved,
as I sat in the reeds
and waited for my love,
was my body and soul,
or so the lovely maid told me,
but still I do not have her.

   100
   Sva com ec nest,
   at in nyta var
   vigdrot a/ll vm vakin;
   meþ brennandom liosom
   oc bornom viþi,
   sva var mer vilstigr of vitaþr.

When next I awoke,
there were bold
warriors all awake;
with torches burning
like brands raised high,
so was my woeful way shown to me.

97
Billings mey
ec fann beðiom á
solhvita sofa;
iarls ynþi
þótti mer ecci vera,
nema viþ þat líc at lifa.

Billing's wife,
I found on her couch,
beautiful as sunlight, asleep;
a noble's delight
seemed nothing to me,
unless I lived with that fine form.

   101
   Oc ner morni,
   er ec var enn vm kominn,
   þa var saldrot vm sofin;
   grey eit ec þa fann
   ennar góðo kono
   bvndit beðiom a.

And towards morning,
when I came back again,
the hall retainers were asleep.
Then I found only the dog
of the good woman's
bound to the couch.

98
Avc ner apni
scaltv, Oþinn! coma,
ef þv vilt þer mela man;
alt ero osca/p,
nema eínir viti
slican lavst saman.

So towards evening,
Odin, must you come,
if you will woo this maiden;
all would be undone,
if any but us two knew
of this shame.

   102
   Ma/rg er góð mer,
   ef gorva kannar,
   hugbrigd viþ hali;
   þa ec þat reynda,
   er iþ rádspaca
   teygða ec a flerdir flióð;
   haþvngar hverrar
   leitaþi mer it horsca man
   oc hafða ec þess vetki vífs.

Many a good maid,
if you look closely,
is fickle towards men;
I learned that the
wise maid
I tried to seduce astray,
only her scorn on me
the clever maid gave,
and I won nothing form her.

99
Aptr ec hvarf,
oc vnna þottomz,
visom vilia fra;
hitt ec hvgða,
at ec hafa mynda
geð hennar alt oc gaman.

Back I turned
and seemed with love
I went mad;
I thought
that I my joy was guaranteed
to have it all, her love and her pleasure.
