The Djed is the symbol of the Egyptian god Osiris, and as such a symbol of stability and regeneration. As with many early Egyptian symbols the original thing this symbol was though to represent is in dispute. It has been said to be the backbone of Osiris, a cedar with its branches cut back, even a pole with sheaves of grain tied to it. All of these things have strong ties to the folklore surrounding Osiris, and his role as an early agricultural deity.
