St. Hans' Cross

St. Hans' cross is defiantly prechristian in origin, and probably a member of the group of protective symbols collectively called "Shield Knots". Han is an abbreviated version of the Low German name for John, and the christianized version of this protective symbol is dedicated to him.

It is a symbol that appears in several early cultures, and is also used today in European road signs and maps to represent a ancient site of historical interest.
