The Ensō, meaning circle in Japanese, is a symbol of Zen Buddhism. It is said to represent everything from the perfect state of mind, to infinity, and even the whole of creation itself. However, several early Buddhist authors caution that the student should not rely on the interpretations of others, but discover enlightenment through the Ensō on their own terms.

Regardless of how the symbol is interpreted it remains the primary subject of calligraphy paintings by Buddhist artists since at least the ninth century, and is recognized today as a prime symbol of Zen Buddhism.
