Éar is loathsome to every earl, when the flesh begins to quickly cool, and the body is put to bed in the dark earth. Prosperity declines, joy departs, and oaths are broken.

Ear is the rune of the grave and endings. It represents death, the complete loss of what is. Unlike the transformation of Hagalaz, Ear extinguishes all that was. If there ever was a historical Totenrune, or “death rune”, it would be Ear.

Ear is one of the characters created to compensate for the phonetic sounds not originally found in early Germanic languages.
